CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

Midweek and gratefully, we’ve encountered no issues with Kane. We are still being followed around, but as long as Zero is with me on deliveries and I have the punisher next to me, I’m not particularly worried.

I know it’s taking its toll on Poppy, but there is nothing I can do about it except what I’m doing, which is making sure the company survives this shitshow that Kane has created.

The delivery we’ve just completed went off without a hitch and as it’s a new customer, I’m happy that they have given us repeat orders on a monthly basis. It’s a warehouse for distributing clothing and they have a cafeteria that feeds their workforce. It’s a good business and the owners care about their staff, making sure they have hot and good meals available.

I’m driving back to the butcher warehouse, and Zero is watching for anything untoward. We’ve alternated driving as I get bored sitting shotgun all the time.

“You want to go on a date Gemmy?” Zero asks and totally takes me by surprise.

“What do you mean on a date? With who?”

“With me. I really like you and I think we’d be good for each other, but you never know unless you try, right?”

I glance at him before looking back at the road. Now this is a big surprise, and one I was not expecting. I’m a little flabbergasted, if I’m honest.

“Well, I don’t see you like that, to be honest. I see you as the big brother I never had, but desperately wanted.” I hate this kind of thing as the last thing I want is to hurt his feelings because I adore this man, just not as a partner, but as a sibling.

“Okay, I don’t want things to be awkward between us, but I had to ask. I can live with being a big brother as long as you can take the ribbing a brother dishes out, that is.” Zero grins and I can see he’s not taken this badly, and it shows me it was the right decision because if he was serious about a relationship with me, he wouldn’t have given in so easily.

“I can live with that, but you know little sisters can be a pain in the ass.” Smirking at the thought.

“Are you ready to settle down now?” I ask because I’m curious since he’s asked me on a date.

“I’m ready to at least get into a relationship that matters. The one-nighters are okay, but they are just meaningless. Filling a need is all they are. But you have to be careful even with that because someone will think it’s more than it is. I’m very careful to tell a woman it’s a one-night thing and nothing more, and I tell them way up front so no misunderstandings can be had.”

“You will not find a decent woman doing one-night deals, as I call them. To find your woman, you need to be looking in better places than the dive bars you frequent.” I giggle because he looks shocked that I know where he drinks and picks up his women.
